Ella van der Straaten

Artist Location: Basildon

Artist Bio

After achieving a 1st class BA degree in Fine Art at the Nottingham Trent University in 2022, Ella van der Straaten has continued to use her art as an expression of her true feelings of growing up on a council estate in Basildon, Essex.  Ella likes to work with installation oil paintings “that can exist within real environments”, changing the way audiences interact with artwork.  Documenting and collecting moments via the use of photography, finding the beauty in the everyday, working with portraits, all helping to develop her relationship with the spirit of the estate she grew up on.

  • Through listening to the voice of Basildon’s youth, Ella van der Straaten created a ‘zine documenting their thoughts and vision of Basildon now, from its start in 1946 as a ‘New Town’, using documentary photography and graphics.

  • Robert Walters UKNA Award finalist - work exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery for ‘The Walk from Town to Estate’, an installation piece inspired by the scenes and characters encountered on Ella’s walk home on the Basildon council estate, where she grew up.
